John Paul II Hospital & Medical Technology Transfer Center
The John Paul II Hospital is a public health care institution. The mission of the Hospital is to fight against the major epidemic and chronic diseases in society induced by factors related to the environment, civilization, psychological and socio-economic impact. The hospital guarantees highest quality specialist services to treat cardiovascular, respiratory and infectious diseases using the most up-to-date equipment and technology.
The hospital foster collaboration with state-owned, regional, local and academic institutions. The hospital co-operates with the Jagiellonian University in carrying out top-class scientific research, clinical research, and teaching activities and with the College of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine, with regional associations, government and social organizations. The John Paul II Hospital also cooperates with numerous external companies and business related institutions.
The John Paul II Hospital is located in Malopolska Voivodship in the historic city of Krakow, in southern Poland, nestled either side of the upper Vistula River. The Hospital is the largest heart and lung centre in Poland. According to its statute, and in compliance with the fundamental patient’s right of having free access to medical services, it is open to all people in need. As one of the best-equipped hospitals with the highest qualified medical personnel it offers 550 beds for treatment of a spectrum of diseases. In 2009 the number of hospitalized patients was more than 22 000 and it is still growing. Similarly, the number of out-patients is growing; in 2009 there were 90 000. John Paul II Hospital is also actively involved and interested in research studies on new drugs and new medical technologies. Constant efforts are made to implement a homogenous concept of health center. In view of the need to build a research infrastructure, activities of the hospital include a possibility of using medical data for scientific purposes and technology transfer.
To meet patient needs, the Hospital has expanded the range of medical care and health programmes, both in-hospital and out-patient. Implementation of projects co-funded by the European Union resulted in major alterations of the hospital structure providing at the same time measurable health effects.
The hospital employs experienced and well qualified staff: 282 physicians, including professors, associate professors, PhD holders, about 600 nurses, 100 technicians of analytics, pharmacy, radiology, electrocardiology and kinesitherapy who work in 15 wards providing daily care as well as day and night care (including 4 clinical wards and 40 specialist laboratories).
